The design brief
The client's wish list for the garden
The family had recently completed a stunning renovation of their new home in Hove, blending contemporary design with timeless character. While the interiors had been masterfully curated, the outdoor spaces remained unfinished, disjointed from the home’s refined aesthetic.
Studio Hummingbird was brought on board to create a planting design for the entrance and courtyard garden. The brief was clear: transform these areas into serene, Mediterranean-inspired sanctuaries that felt like a natural continuation of the home’s interiors.
Client Vision & Challenges
As a dynamic, time-pressed family, they were struggling to source suitable plants and visualise how their outdoor space could come to life. Their key desire was to achieve a Mediterranean feel that would complement the warm tones and textures found throughout their home, while ensuring the garden remained practical and easy to maintain.
The family also wanted their outdoor space to serve different purposes: an inviting entrance to welcome guests and a tranquil courtyard to relax and recharge as a family.
Our Approach
Inspired by Mediterranean landscapes, she developed a bespoke planting scheme featuring drought-tolerant plants, elegant textures, and soft colour palettes. Olive trees, lavender, erigeron and ornamental grasses were thoughtfully placed to create a layered, harmonious look.
Installation & Results
Studio Hummingbird oversaw the installation in collaboration with a trusted landscaping team. The result is a beautifully cohesive outdoor environment that reflects the family’s lifestyle and aesthetic sensibilities. The courtyard now offers a peaceful retreat framed by lush, fragrant greenery, while the entrance exudes a welcoming elegance that sets the tone for the home.
