What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file a website stores on your device. Some are needed for a site to work; others tell the site’s owner how it is being used. None of the cookies on this site identify you by name.

The cookies this site uses

1. Your cookie choice (always set)

When you press Accept or Decline on the cookie bar, one cookie called sh_consent remembers your answer so the bar does not appear on every page. It lasts twelve months if you accepted and thirty days if you declined, after which you are asked again. It holds only the word “accepted” or “declined”. This cookie is needed for the site to respect your choice, so it is set either way.

2. Analytics (only if you accept)

Nothing in this group is set until you press Accept. If you do, two services load through Google Tag Manager:

  • Google Analytics counts visits and shows which pages are read and how people arrive, in aggregate. Cookies: _ga and _ga_*, which last up to two years. Google’s own privacy notice is at policies.google.com/privacy.
  • Microsoft Clarity records how pages are used, for example where people scroll and tap, so the site can be made easier to read. Text you type is masked. Cookies: _clck (one year), _clsk (one day) and CLID. Microsoft’s privacy statement is at privacy.microsoft.com.

Neither service is used to show you advertising, and this site sets no advertising cookies of its own.

3. Video

Client stories on the home page are YouTube videos. YouTube may set its own cookies when you press play; until then it sets none. YouTube’s notice is part of Google’s privacy notice linked above.

4. Signing in (editors only)

WordPress sets login and session cookies for the people who edit the site. Visitors never receive them.

Changing your choice

To see the cookie bar again and choose afresh, clear your choice here. You can also delete cookies at any time in your browser’s settings; every browser has a page explaining how.

Where to find out more

How we look after any personal details you send us, for example through the contact form or when booking a call, is set out in the Privacy Policy. The UK regulator for cookies is the Information Commissioner’s Office, at ico.org.uk.
