Bespoke gardens for Horsham, Billingshurst, Southwater, Storrington and Pulborough.
Studio Hummingbird designs gardens across Horsham and the villages around it: Southwater, Billingshurst, Broadbridge Heath, Mannings Heath, Cowfold, Slinfold and Rudgwick. Led by garden designer Victoria Rumens, we create gardens that suit the way you live, the character of your home and the heavy Wealden ground most Horsham gardens are built on.
Whether you have a new-build garden that needs designing from scratch, or an established plot that has lost its way, we can help, from a single visit for clear advice to a full design built by trusted local landscapers.
A Garden We Have Designed Near Horsham
Every garden starts with a different problem. Here is one we solved in Southwater.
New patios needed planting to match. The client wanted bold colour, Mediterranean warmth and year-round structure without a full redesign, so we designed a layered, clay-tolerant scheme with olive trees, and replaced the usual fence line with pleached trees and mixed hedging.
Victoria was patient and knowledgeable regarding my planting designs. She took the time to understand my requirements and advise me regarding my plant choices. I am pleased with the result and look forward to enjoying more time in the garden as a result.

Really enjoyable garden design workshop, with practical tips from Victoria on maximising the space in a small garden. Highly recommend.

I recently attended Victoria's Garden Workshop at Studio Hummingbird, and I have to say, I was genuinely surprised. Going in, I thought I had already done everything possible with my garden as its quite small. But Victoria completely shifted that perspective. Not only did I learn new techniques and plants, but I also walked away with fresh ideas and a completely different way of thinking about how to elevate my garden space. Her knowledge, creativity, and attention to detail are exceptional, and she has a real talent for helping you see potential where you didn't even realise it existed. If you think your garden is "done", think again. Victoria will show you what's truly possible. Highly recommend her personal service and approach.

What Horsham Gardens Need
Horsham sits in the Low Weald, and most gardens here share the same few challenges. Knowing them is a large part of getting a design right first time.
Heavy clay
Weald clay is rich but sticky: wet and cold in winter, baked hard in a dry summer. We choose plants that thrive in it, as we did in Southwater, and plan drainage and levels before anything is built.
New-build plots
New homes around Horsham often come with compacted soil, a thin layer of turf and a bare fence line. A good design fixes the ground first and gives the garden structure from day one.
Softer boundaries
Instead of another run of fence panels, pleached trees and mixed hedging give privacy, shelter and wildlife value, and define different parts of the garden.
Small spaces
Many town gardens are narrow or overlooked. With careful layout, levels and planting they can feel far bigger than they are, something we cover in our garden design workshops.
Layered, seasonal planting chosen for clay, your aspect and how much time you want to spend gardening.
Design-only packages
To-scale drawings and planting plans for you or your landscaper to build from.
Full garden transformations
From concept to completion, with the build coordinated with trusted local landscapers.
Before anything is built, you see your new garden in 3D, so there are no surprises and no costly mistakes. If you want to know what to budget, our garden designer cost guide sets out typical fees, and the full list of services is on our services page.
