Bespoke gardens for Pulborough and the Arun valley.
Studio Hummingbird designs gardens across Pulborough and the Arun valley villages around it: Coldwaltham, Fittleworth, Bury, Nutbourne and West Chiltington. Led by garden designer Victoria Rumens, we create gardens that suit the way you live, the character of your home and the river, brooks and sandy hills this part of Sussex is known for.
Whether you have a riverside garden, a village plot or a larger rural garden looking towards the Downs, we can help, from a single visit for clear advice to a full design built by trusted local landscapers.
Gardens We Have Designed Nearby
The nearest gardens we have designed are a short drive away in Ashington and Southwater.
A modern, welcoming entrance: a geometric tiled path to the door, evergreen Carex and Pittosporum with Salvia and lavender for colour, and statement lighting, all chosen for year-round interest with little upkeep.
New patios needed planting to match. We designed a layered, clay-tolerant scheme with olive trees for colour and year-round structure, and replaced the usual fence line with pleached trees and mixed hedging.
Thank you Victoria for visiting my garden and giving me some really sound advice that's easy to follow and put into practice. I would highly recommend your company to anyone wanting some improvements and design ideas.
— Gill, Pulborough
Victoria was patient and knowledgeable regarding my planting designs. She took the time to understand my requirements and advise me regarding my plant choices. I am pleased with the result and look forward to enjoying more time in the garden as a result.

What Pulborough Gardens Need
Pulborough sits where the Arun valley meets the sandy greensand hills, so two gardens a mile apart can need completely different planting.
Wet ground by the river
Near the river and the brooks the soil is heavier and can stay wet through winter. We plan levels and drainage first, and choose plants that are happy with their feet wet.
Sandy, free-draining hills
Higher up, the greensand drains fast and dries out in summer. Drought-tolerant planting and good soil preparation keep it looking full without constant watering.
Gardens for wildlife
With Pulborough Brooks on the doorstep, many clients want a garden that welcomes birds and pollinators. Our guide to pollinator-friendly garden design shows how.
Big views, big plots
Rural gardens can feel exposed and hard to know where to start. A design breaks a large space into areas you will actually use, and frames the view rather than competing with it.
Layered, seasonal planting chosen for your soil, aspect and how much time you want to spend gardening.
Design-only packages
To-scale drawings, 3D views and planting plans for you or your landscaper to build from.
Full garden transformations
From concept to completion, with the build coordinated with trusted local landscapers.
Before anything is built, you see your new garden in 3D, so there are no surprises and no costly mistakes. If you want to know what to budget, our garden designer cost guide sets out typical fees, and the full list of services is on our services page.
